Is Hypnotherapy dangerous?

No.  People enter into a state of trance many times daily.

Can you recall every saying, "I just zoned out completely...." or have you ever said to your child, "Earth to Jacob, Hello?" when they are just staring into space?

If you answered yes, you have experienced a trance & witnessed someone in a trance.

Driving, watching TV, listening to music, working on a favorite hobby or activity in the "zone" state. These are all "altered states of consciousness," and all are various levels of trance. Trance is normal, natural and common.

What does is it fee like to be in a hypnotic state?

Some physical indications of this state are slow breathing, lower heart rate, warm & dry hands and relaxed muscles. You may also feel calm, peaceful, and may have a "clear mind", free of negative, distracting or racing thoughts.

Will I lose control? Will I bark like a dog or cluck like a chicken?

Let me guess: you've seen a stage show where a hypnotist made people do all these crazy things. Or, perhaps you have ideas from Hollywood's movies and TV. The stage hypnotist carefully selects his subjects (watch how many volunteers he has sit down), and he chooses people he knows WILL bark like a dog. They will because somewhere inside them is a part that loves to entertain. And they will do it because, deep down inside, they don't believe there is anything wrong with barking like a dog.

You always have control, and you can always hear what's going on. Hypnosis is nothing but a state of relaxed deep focus. If at any time you are in a hypnotic state and you wish to be fully awake, you simply open your eyes.

Will I reveal my darkest secrets?

What concerns many clients is whether they will reveal things about themselves that they're afraid to. Everyone has skeletons in the closet. Everyone has things in their past that they don't want to talk about or might be a little ashamed of.  Your secrets will remain your secrets. Hypnosis is not a truth serum. You are aware of the process and in control of what is said or not said at any time during the session.

My friend tried hypnosis to quit smoking and it didn't work.

Some people leave their first hypnotherapy session saying, "I wasn't hypnotized - I knew what was going on the whole time!"  Of course you did....

Hypnosis is not a state of amnesia or unawareness. Hypnosis is a state of very heightened awareness and focus.

Can someone be hypnotized agained their will?

Hypnosis can not make you do something that is against your morals or ethics. All hypnosis is self-hypnosis. A Hypnotherapist can not make you do something that you do not want to do. That's why some people can be hypnotized to stop smoking and yet they still smoke. You have to want the change, agree with the change, and then hypnosis is an instrument for helping make that change better, faster, and permanent.

Am I just sleeping during hypnosis?

No!

One of the biggest myths is the idea that you'll be asleep when you are hypnotized. That your mind sort of disappears and you'll have no recollection or memory or anything else of the experiences you've had. When you go into hypnosis you will be totally aware of everything that is going on around you. The sound of my voice and everything else. So you will not be asleep, You will hear everything I say, In fact, you will be even more aware of the things I say.

How many sessions will I have to have to see results?

It's impossible to determine how many sessions an individual will need.

However, research shows that 3-5 sessions are required to bring about lasting change. Some people can be helped with less, and some people might require a deal more.

Is Hypnotherapy covered by medical insurance?

Always contact your health insurance company before your appointment to ask if Hypnotherapy is a covered treatment.

Most insurance companies will require a referral from your Primary Care Physician or Mental Health Provider.

If a referral is completed, Changing Paths Hypnotherapy will assist in filing claim.

I am not gullible and I think I'm too smart & strong minded to be hypnotized.....

Many people think that in order to be suggestible you have to be gullible. There's a big difference between gullibility and suggestibility. There is evidence to suggest that there is a correlation between intelligence levels and suggestibility. A sharp mind is an asset in accessing and benefiting from the state of hypnosis. The smarter you are, the more suggestible you tend to be.

Cambridge dictionary defines intelligence as:
The ability to learn, understand and make judgments or have opinions that are based on reason. Simply put, intelligence is as your ability to have many different experiences, understand them and immerse yourself in them coming to an honest, unbiased view of something. That is what suggestions are designed to do, to give you a different set of experiences and you accepting them.  We are open to other methods because we possess the confidence and intellect to realize there may be information out there that we do not know.  It's a willingness to always learn and expand ourselves.  That is how people evolve or grow, how we become more intelligent or find better solutions to things.  I have found that when an individual is presented with something unknown to them and they lack the confidence and intelligence to accept that they may not know something, they may become defensive and insulting toward the topic.  People  sometimes ridicule and demean what they don't or can't understand.   They fear what is unknown to them.

Hypnosis and hypnotherapy - What's the difference?

Hypnosis is a tool and hypnotherapy is the process of using that tool. Hypnosis is when a person enters a trance-like state through the guidance of the therapist. Hypnotherapy is the process of applying hypnosis for therapy.
